EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US on five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted figures who have been central to campaigns to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the move.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a much broader existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and European institutions.
