Government Official Says MoD Looking at Potential Threat from Chinese Cars, as Staff Instructed to Refrain from Confidential Discussions in Cars.

An defense minister has revealed that the Ministry of Defence is actively investigating the potential threats posed by Chinese-made vehicles, and staff have been instructed to refrain from talking about secret matters in any vehicles.

Security Guidance for Defence Personnel

In a recent interview on LBC, Luke Pollard addressed reports that MoD officials have been instructed not to discuss classified material while riding in Chinese cars.

The minister said that the MoD is “looking into” Chinese vehicles within its vehicle pools, but emphasised that security is a issue in all modern vehicles.

Our department has a collection of thousands of vehicles in the MoD and Chinese ones account for a tiny fraction.
But regardless of if you’re traveling in a vehicle from China or a car from another country, what we’ve asked our staff is to avoid connecting MoD technology into their vehicle, not to have conversations at a classified classification in any vehicle, due to the increasing risks of surveillance that exist in all vehicle, to restrict those confidential talks in secure locations. That’s a prudent and sensible thing for anyone worried about security.

When it was put to him that it would be wise for the MoD to stop using every Chinese vehicles, the minister replied: ‘That’s exactly what we are looking into at the present time.”

Broader Security Background

The revelation comes as reports from Scandinavian countries have alerted the United Kingdom to the existence of dual-use shutdown mechanisms in Chinese-made buses, which could allow China to disable buses and cause disruption to public transit.

Additionally, a Russia spy ship has been directing laser beams at Royal Air Force aircrew, described as a “extremely risky” act by defence officials.

The wider security situation highlights the significance of robust protocols and vigilance in all aspects of official operations, including vehicle usage to discussions habits.
