Patients Stopping Anti-Obesity Medications Regain Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study reveals that individuals who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who end traditional diet and exercise plans.

Findings released in a prominent health publication shows that while obese people frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Users using these drugs need to be informed of the potential of fast weight regain when the medication is stopped," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery means a return to original weight in about 18 months.

Weighing Therapies

The research, which reviewed dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of these new drugs with other pills.

Scientists point out that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally see a slower creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Explaining the Fast Rebound

Doctors propose the way of the jabs explains the accelerated weight return.

GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Disease?

The NHS suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts argue that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment might need to be long-term.

This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "emphasize the persistent nature of obesity," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Accounts

Users who have come off the medication describe a intense resurgence of cravings.

"It was like a switch that goes on and I was suddenly ravenous," described a patient.

This difficulty is exacerbated if individuals have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Growing Use

Survey data indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Use is higher among women than men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while the jabs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and long-term success hinges on combined behavioural changes.
